Life Span Development Essays - Curious George, Child Development Life Span Development In the book, Curious George rides a bike by H.A. Rey, George receives a new bike from his friend. His friend tells him to be careful with his new bike and to keep close to the house while he is gone. George does not listen to his friend and decides to go exploring away from the house. While exploring, George sees two boys playing with their toy boats and then decides that he wants to play with a toy boat. George made a plan (how to make the boat) and then he carried out the task. George made himself a boat out of newspaper. This is an example of stage two, 1-3 years, Erikson. In stage two, children express their growing self control by climbing, touching, exploring, and try to do things for themselves. (Dennis Coon) Though most children in stage two would be exploring their kitchen floor, or ceiling, not a river! I also read the story, Curious George gets a medal by H.A. Rey. In this story George makes a mess in his friends house. George is anxious to clean up the mess before his friend gets home. The reason that he is so eager to clean up the mess is because he is thinking about the possible consequences of his actions. If this were an actual little boy, he would be thinking, I dont want to get punished, so I will clean up the mess. Or, Oh, No! Im going to get into big trouble! This is an example of Stage 1 the preconventional level, Kohlberg. If his friend werent coming home would George work so vigorously to clean up the mess? I think not. In the second half of the book, George is asked to help a professor in a somewhat dangerous experiment. The professor that has asked this of him says, Of course everything will be forgiven if you are willing to go. (George got into a bit of trouble while he was there.) George agrees to this request because he wants to please others. George wants to be nice. Why would a child want to please others? Its because they are trying to avoid disapproval. This is an example of Stage 3, the conventional level, Kohlberg. The last book that I read was Curious George by H.A. Rey. George is taken from his home in Africa, to a big ship. His friend tells him to run along and play but dont get into any trouble. George promises to be good. George found some sea gulls on the deck, and saw that they could fly. He wanted to fly too. George tried to fly, and fell into the ocean instead. Obviously, George is not thinking logically. He does not realize that he can not fly. This is an example of the preoperational stage, 2-7 years. Piaget. I have another example of the preoperational stage not related to the book. My little sister, Zo, is 4 years old. My mother recently bought her a personalized song tape. In the beginning of the tape it asks her to yell out her name. She screams, Zo!!. Then it says Zo?! Thats a nice name! Throughout the tape her name is included in all of the songs. She thinks that the person talking can really here her! Now, getting back on track. After falling into the ocean George is rescued and once again promises that he will not get into any more trouble. Why would an actual child decide this if he/she were in the same situation? They would act this way because they would be thinking about their own needs. They wouldn't want to fall into the water again or be upset in any way. This is an example of stage two, the preconventional stage, pleasure-seeking orientation. In conclusion, I have found these stages to hold true, in my own personal life, and in childrens storybooks. Its really great to finally understand why my little sister acts the way she does!

Background to the study Youth travel represents a significant market within tourism (Horak and Weber, 2000) in terms of size and growth rates (Matzler and Siller, 2003). Youth travel has also been identified as one of the largest segments of global tourism and also seen as having considerable potential for future growth as youth affluence increases (Richard and Wilson, 2004). Furthermore young tourists are often trendsetters who establish and build the attractiveness of tourist destinations (Horak and Weber, 2000). Economic importance and social value of youth travel has been recognized (UNWTO, 2008). Locally owned businesses and communities particularly benefit from adventurous young travelers (dAnjou, 2004) thus reducing leakages and stimulate investment (UNWTO, 2008). Youth travel is acknowledged to be multibillion dollar business and one that provides an indicator of future travel trends (Hall, 2005). However few countries are currently engaged in activities to promote youth travel (UNWTO, 2008). Besides, youth travel is a little researched sector of tourism market (Cooper et al., 2008). According to UNWTO (2008) only a third of countries have youth travel policy, less than a third collect statistics on the market, only a quarter have policies for product development and less than third have a marketing policy. In developing countries and more so in Kenya youth travel is seen as an extension of the education process, familiarizing young people with their own country and has not been classified as a separate category (UNWTO, 2005). In Kenya domestic youth travel has been spearheaded by the wildlife clubs of Kenya (WCK), a non-governmental organization whose aim is to promote wildlife and Environmental Education (EE) (Sindiga, 1999). Travel by young people locally, motivated by leisure, adventure and sport activities, is a significant sector that has continued to increase in frequency, and expand widely in the country (MOT, 2010). There are efforts to reach out to growing market to draw larger numbers of young travelers to Kenya. 1.2. Problem Statement Youth travel is a growing market which is becoming increasingly important for many countries. The youth travel has also been acknowledged to be multibillion dollar business but the question arises whether this multibillion dollar industry is fully tapped in tourism in Kenya. In spite of the size of the market and growth in youth travel, the final draft of tourism policy has no specific policy for this market. There appears to be a policy gap between the growing potential of youth travel and the lack of action on part of the government. Youth travel has not been given its due consideration nor has it been studied in great detail. Previous studies carried out on Kenyas tourism industry by Dieke (1994), Sindiga (1996), Ndivo (2009) among others have made few attempts to focus on addressing specific tourism market segments. This has led to having relatively little information available on the size, scope and status of the youth travel market in terms of the profile, preferred products, as well as supporting infrastructure. Destination image is seen to provide the initial motivation to visit the place. Awareness set includes all the travel locations which people might consider as potential destination before any decision process about their trip has been initiated. Image of destination affects the choice of a destination. Destination choice is based on match between perceived activities offered and preferred activities. Travel constraints includes individual constraints (such as money, time and social factors such as fear and safety) and external constraints (such as seasonality accessibility and influence by significant others) are also seen to influence the actual travel to a destination. This study will therefore attempt to find out the influence of both social-psychological set factors and destination characteristics in creating destination image and awareness among the youth in Kenya. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible: Gaining Integrity through Failure Essay

Integrity is achieved through the gaining of wisdom; the gaining of wisdom is a direct result of failure. Arthur Miller wrote the moralizing drama, The Crucible, in this play the main character John Proctor was wrongly accused of witchcraft and served the death penalty along with two others. The story of John Proctor was indirectly summarized by the American author William Saroyan when he said, â€Å"Good people†¦are good because they’ve come to wisdom through failure,† meaning that a person willing to sacrifice for his beliefs is good because although he has failed, by not according to his moral codes he has gained integrity and the ability to refuse to live a life of hypocrisy; further, John Proctor is good because he died refusing to lie in order to live. Proctor failed because his commitments wavered depending upon his own personal needs. Miller demonstrated Proctor’s failure, and later redemption and goodness throughout the text by means of characteriza tion, conflict, and theme. Miller uses the literary element of characterization to show John Proctor’s transformation from failure to goodness. There is a definite contradiction in Proctor; additionally, he says that he loves his wife; but, he adulters her as soon as she becomes ill. Also he does not attend church because he dislikes the way in which Reverend Samuel Parris governs the church, as well as the way he preaches. Proctor abhors how Parris uses donations for the church to buy superfluous things, † †¦When I look to heaven and see my money glaring at his elbows- it hurt my prayer, sir, it hurt my prayer† (69). Proctor’s commitment wavers depending upon his own personal needs. Arthur Miller characterized him as one with weak theology and one who struggled with personal commitment, in Puritan society religion is valued highly and those who don’t follow Puritan rules are not accepted and alienated by society.
