At the East Campus/West Campus Water War (which annoyed me a little this year because it was an official event and we werent allowed to use the moat around the chapel and it lasted five minutes instead of 25), East Campus built a wooden Godzilla monster that carried jugs of water. By the time the party started, its arms and wheels were gone, but it sitll looked pretty cool out there in the courtyard: This interesting spinning ride, a version of which happens every year, has a freshman in it: Do you think Harvey will care that I bled on the S? I carved out the letters in East Campus in the picture below. I also managed to stab myself in the hand with a utility knife. If you were there, you might have noticed that the S in campus was smeared with red? Yeah. Im not quite sure what this hammock thing was, but it was fun to try to crawl around in The Randomites made liquid nitrogen ice cream. Double double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble? I guess nothing was really bubbling (or burning, for that matter), there was just a lot of evaporating nitrogen. There was a bungee-type swing between the two parallels of EC, like those rides you see at amusement parks that cost an extra $30 or so. Believe it or not, that red blur is a swinging freshman in a red shirt. And then, EC had freshmen, nearly a quarter of whom had been temped in other dorms (yay for people making the most of Rush!). And there was Hall Rush. All the halls hung signs around EC encouraging the frosh to visit them. Our posters had Krotus, the dark lord of 5th East, on them, with entertaining flavor text underneath, as pictured below: Hey, its a good way to clean the table! We had other nice slogans as well, most of which were parodying our own image, which is something we do really well, because we think that the rumors about us are really funny. Some of the other slogans included Hate will make you strong, More Supreme Court acquittals than your average living group (this is true), and something about the coldness or darkness of our hearts. And also, Hi. We had fun activities. We try to make our Rush activities things that happen even when Rush is not going on, so we had stir-fry cooking, smashing things with the Ultrabuster, movies, loud music coming from the music server and peoples rooms, talking to Alex 04 in Pittsburgh over the phone, and chatting with upperclassmen and alums like Lex 00, Peter 01, Richard 02 and Hani 96 in the lounges. We also had knife-throwing, which happens when we have a suitable (usually foam) target. We had to get rid of last years because Cambridge said it violated the fire code. The knives had homemade blades and etchings of Krotus in the handles, and were done by Dany 07. The targets were pink foam with two emo kids drawn on them by our resident emo kid, Sarah 08. This unnamed freshman just finished his turn. And we did a four-or-five-story tall projection of Krotus on the side of the Green Building from out our kitchen window. The Relationship Between Pozzo and Lucky - Literature Essay Samples

The debate about the relationship of the two characters Pozzo and Lucky has existed since the original performance of Waiting for Godot and has failed, much like the rest of the play, to suggest any kind of concrete conclusion. The name â€Å"Lucky† comes from Beckett’s reasoning that this character is â€Å"lucky† not to have any further expectations, reiterating the nihilism that comes with the play. The relationship between Lucky and Pozzo is, on the surface (if anything with Beckett can be on the surface), a fairly cut and dry â€Å"master/servant† relationship. Lucky is treated unforgivingly by Pozzo. Often depicted as an old man, Lucky is forced to carry Pozzo’s baggage, is not permitted to rest, and is connected to him by a rope (or leash). He obediently does the majority of what Pozzo wishes, and a large portion of Pozzo’s dialogue is dedicated to giving Lucky various instructions (â€Å"Stop! Forward! Back!†). Regardless of th e abuse that Lucky faces, he remains totally subservient to Pozzo, and seems distraught when Pozzo mentions wanting to get rid of him (â€Å" I am bringing him to the fair, where I hope to get a good price for him†). Lucky is the first to enter the scene, with a very long rope around his neck and Pozzo at the other end of it. This arrangement is potentially supposed to be very comical; however, it is also interesting that the â€Å"slave† character is the one who is leading the â€Å"master† and not the other way around. It has been suggested by critics that the relationship between Pozzo and Lucky may not be as clear cut as first assumed, and in fact could even be seen as an exaggeration of the relationship between Vladimir and Estragon. On closer examination, many viewers and scholars have come to the conclusion that despite the blatantly submissive nature of Lucky, he actually posses the most power in the relationship. When he is ordered to dance (â€Å"He refused once. Dance misery!†), when he is ordered to think (â€Å"Think, pig!†) he does so, not as a result of servitude to Pozzo, but rather to â€Å" fill a vacant need of Pozzo: he committed all of these acts for Pozzo†. When viewed in this way, we can see that Pozzo is actually the most insecure of the characters, and is a slave to the demands that he makes of Lucky, therefore making him the one with the least power. Lucky’s â€Å"Think-speech† gives us an uncompromising view of the way Lucky’s mind works, desperately grabbing for some form of pure truth, and always ever so slightly missing it, it is a caricature of the deteriorating intellect that comes with age. It is a contrast to Pozzo’s â€Å"sky-speech† which is borderline pretentious, and seems to be Pozzo attempting to find any fabricated or substandard meaning he can. Pozzo attempts to dominate Lucky and prevent his â€Å"think-speech† once it has started, but we see yet again his failure in sovereignty, as he cannot stop Lucky from speaking, no matter what he does, Lucky’s thirst for truth prevails. This aspect of the play recalls the work of Jacques Lacan, the French phil osopher, who could mark this as Pozzo’s realisation that â€Å"the truth can only come out of the mouth of a slave.† Pozzo gives Lucky the credit of being his cultural adviser, and of having taught him the ability to â€Å"reason.† Pozzo’s obsession with the cosmos and reason is potentially a nod to other western philosophers Plato and Aristotle, who have both famously argued that the ability to reason is the true meaning of our souls, and perhaps the only thing that separates us from animals. After Pozzo’s major monologue about the sky and its wonders, we see his memory fade, and he relies, yet again, on Lucky (â€Å"Thats how it is on this bitch of an earth†). Pozzo has been widely considered as the â€Å"antagonist† of the play, in a slightly unconventional use of the term, as he does not exist in opposition of Vladimir and Estragon, yet does bring turmoil into their veiled lives. He portrays himself as very grandiose, as an aristocrat, explaining how he lives in a â€Å"manor† and he â€Å"owns many slaves.† Yet he wears the same type of bowler hat as Estragon and Vladimir, and a similar tattered suit. Pozzo is portrayed as an unforgiving master to Lucky, but as has been previously discussed, it seems that he is more at the mercy of Lucky’s temperament than the other way around. He explains to Vladimir and Estragon that he is mistreated by Lucky and feels exploited by him. An interesting theory involves the comparison of Pozzo to Godot, or even to God. Pozzo could certainly be seen as a God in the relationship between himself and Lucky, but if so, then he is an imperfect God. If a deity is what Beckett was try ing to make out of Pozzo, then such a setup raises the very interesting question of â€Å"what does Lucky represent?† Potentially, God and man have melded, to make one totally dependent on the other. Man is dependent on God for instructions, and God dependent on Man for gratification. Of course, all of this is speculation, as very little is known about the true meaning behind the characters. There are really only two certainties that we know external to the play, from Beckett’s commentary: 1) All the characters (except for the boy) wear bowler hats. 2) Godot is not God. Beckett, it seems, was not a fan of the ongoing theories about his work. He criticized the critics for making â€Å"something rather simple, rather complicated. Perhaps there isn’t, and was never meant to be, a metaphor behind the absurd relationship between Pozzo and Lucky; they existed only within the confines of the script that they were written into, and were nothing more than that, written characters. The point being, there is no point; that’s the point. Many actors have attempted to create full-fledged, three-dimensional characters from the very little and very confusing information Beckett has provided us with in Waiting for Godot. It is unknown whether Beckett himself had created fully complicated characters, and was simply neglecting to share the information with us, or whether he had preferred to leave the characters up to the interpretation of the actors. For instance, Jean Martin attempted to play the character of Lucky as having Parkinsons disease. When Martin told Beckett, the playwright approved, stating simply â€Å"Yes, of course you should† and briefly mentioned that his mother had also been a sufferer. Perhaps this is the only evidence that there was a greater idea behind Beckett’s masterpiece, that the characters were conceived and tangible, and did not only exist as mere items of Becketts whimsy.

The forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families was official government policy from 1909 to 1969. However the practice took place both before and after this period. Governments, churches and welfare bodies all took part. The removal policy was managed by the Aborigines Protection Board (APB). The APB was a government board established in 1909 with the power to remove children without parental consent and without a court order. Children could be put into an institution or mission dormitory, fostered or adopted. Many children were fostered or adopted after spending time in a children’s home. Under the White Australia and assimilation policies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were ‘not of full blood’ were encouraged to become assimilated into the broader society so that eventually there would be no more Indigenous people left. At the time Indigenous people were seen as an inferior race. Children were taken from Aboriginal parents so they could be brought up ‘white’ and taught to reject their Aboriginality. Children were placed with institutions and from the 1950s began also being placed with white families. Aboriginal children were expected to become labourers or servants, so in general the education they were provided was very poor. Aboriginal girls in particular were sent to homes established by the Board to be trained in domestic service. The lack of understanding and respect for Aboriginal people also meant that many people who supported the child removals believed that they were doing the ‘right thing’. Some people believed that Aboriginal people lived poor and unrewarding lives, and that institutions would provide a positive environment in which Aboriginal people could better themselves. The dominant racist views in the society and government also means that people believed that Aboriginal people were bad parents and that Aboriginal woman did not look after their children. No-one knows how many children were taken, as most records have been lost or destroyed. Many parents whose children were taken never saw them again, and siblings who were taken were deliberately seperated from each other. Today many Aboriginal people still do not know who their relatives are or have been unable to track them down. The generations of children who were taken from their families became known as the Stolen Generations. The practice of removing children continued up until the late 1960s meaning today there are Aboriginal people as young as their late 40s or 50s who are members of the Stolen Generations. Bringing Them Home In the 1990s the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (the Australian Human Rights Commission) started a national inquiry into the practice of removing Indigenous children. The Bringing Them Home Report on the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children was tabled in Parliament on 26 May 1997. The report outlined the devastating impact the child removal policies had on children and their families. It found that many of the institutions and homes in which the children were placed were very cruel, and sexual and physical abuse of the children was common. It found that many of the people who managed the removals, including both the government and churches, abused their power and breached their supposed obligations as protectors and ‘carers’. The report told a story of welfare boards, of segregation, of so-called ‘assimilation’ policies which did not work. The report also told stories of mothers fleeing into the bush with their babies, of the virtual slavery of the young girls who were sent out to rural properties to work as maids and of nannies of the children being treated like cattle. One woman reported: â€Å"We was bought like a market. We was all lined up in white dresses and they would come round and pick you out like you was for sale†. The report found that the practice of forced removal was highly traumatic not only for the children but also for their families. The policy broke important cultural, spiritual and family ties which crippled not only individuals, but whole families and even whole communities. The report found that members of the Stolen Generations suffered higher rates of sexual abuse, maltreatment, dislocation of family life, poverty and hardship than other Aboriginal people. The report also found that the policy of forced removal was based on racist assumptions about the benefits that would flow from such policies. The aim of the policy was to ‘breed out’ the Aboriginal race. In international law practices designed to destroy an entire race of people are known as genocide, and are forbidden under the 1948 Convention of Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. While many records have been lost, it has been estimated that between 1 in 10 and 3 in 10 Aboriginal children were forcibly removed between 1910 and 1970. Continued Impact There have been many studies which show the damage caused by the forced removal on Indigenous communities. While some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were removed from their families on genuine welfare grounds, and some gained access to some advantages (such as increased educational opportunities), the great majority of Indigenous children who were removed suffered life-long negative consequences. For example, people who were members of the Stolen Generations are more likely to suffer from depression, have worse health and a shorter life span than other Indigenous people, and are more likely to be imprisoned than other Indigenous people. For example 50% of deaths investigated by the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody were of Indigenous people who have been removed from their families as children. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were placed with white families did not find out about their background until late in life. Disconnection from land and language meant loss of culture for many. One of the people interviewed for the Bringing Them Home Report said: â€Å"A lot of people say that they don’t know what exactly they are, whether they’re white or they’re black. In this story George makes a mess in his friends house. George is anxious to clean up the mess before his friend gets home. The reason that he is so eager to clean up the mess is because he is thinking about the possible consequences of his actions. If this were an actual little boy, he would be thinking, I dont want to get punished, so I will clean up the mess. Or, Oh, No! Im going to get into big trouble! This is an example of Stage 1 the preconventional level, Kohlberg. If his friend werent coming home would George work so vigorously to clean up the mess? I think not. In the second half of the book, George is asked to help a professor in a somewhat dangerous experiment. The professor that has asked this of him says, Of course everything will be forgiven if you are willing to go. (George got into a bit of trouble while he was there.) George agrees to this request because he wants to please others. George wants to be nice. Why would a child want to please others? Its because they are trying to avoid disapproval. His friend tells him to run along and play but dont get into any trouble. George promises to be good. George found some sea gulls on the deck, and saw that they could fly. He wanted to fly too. George tried to fly, and fell into the ocean instead. Obviously, George is not thinking logically. He does not realize that he can not fly. This is an example of the preoperational stage, 2-7 years. Piaget. I have another example of the preoperational stage not related to the book. My little sister, Zo, is 4 years old. My mother recently bought her a personalized song tape. In the beginning of the tape it asks her to yell out her name. She screams, Zo!!. Then it says Zo?! Thats a nice name! Throughout the tape her name is included in all of the songs. She thinks that the person talking can really here her! Now, getting back on track. After falling into the ocean George is rescued and once again promises that he will not get into any more trouble. Why would an actual child decide this if he/she were in the same situation? They would act this way because they would be thinking about their own needs. They wouldn't want to fall into the water again or be upset in any way. This is an example of stage two, the preconventional stage, pleasure-seeking orientation. Significance and Anticipated Output The study seeks to establish the youth travel as potential market for tourism in Kenya. The study will seek to identify the youth travel niche market, product and infrastructure. It is considered that the findings of the study will contribute significantly to ministry of tourism as a guideline for formulating policies to enhance and promote youth travel. The findings will also contribute towards identifying attributes which satisfy young travelers in Kenya. This will be useful to local tourism investors and will also help in opening up the less visited destinations. Comprehending what young travelers seek in Kenya may help tourist marketers and promoters in increasing the growth of tourism by enhancing their strategies for marketing youth travel. Finally, the study will contribute to the body of knowledge in youth travel research which has been inadequately undertaken in Kenya while strengthening the existing body of knowledge in tourism in Kenya. 1.7. Limitations to the Study The study will use purposive sampling and the sample is selected from one particular tourist destination in Nairobi which is an urban setting. This may not represent the whole youth market in Kenya. The result should be generalized with caution to other regions. This is due to difference in culture, environment and social-economic conditions which may affect the youth travel decision making. However, care has been taken to ensure that the selected group represents the travelling youth segment noting that the city of Nairobi is the premier source of domestic tourism market in Kenya (Ndivo, 2009) 1.8. Conceptual Framework This study on youth travel as potential market for tourism in Kenya will be based on activities based model of destination choice by Moscardo et al., (1996) figure 1 in attempt to establish factors that influence youth travel in Kenya. They argue that motives provide travelers with expectations for activities and destinations are seen offering these activities The figure suggests that internal inputs and external output factors contribute to destination image and awareness set. Internal input refers to social psychological set of factors such as personal characteristics for example age, income, experience, lifecycle and personal motivation. The internal input factors are seen as providing the desired activities by an individual at a destination. External output refers to destination characteristics derived from information gained. These include past experience, promotional information and information from other sources. The external output factors are seen as providing information about activities available at a destination. Destination images are seen as the result of the destination characteristic, how they are presented and how they are integrated with social psychological factors such as motives and interests. Destination image is seen to provide the initial motivation to visit the place. Awareness set includes all the travel locations which people might consider as potential destination before any decision process about their trip has been initiated. Image of destination affects the choice of a destination. Destination choice is based on match between perceived activities offered and preferred activities. Travel constraints includes individual constraints (such as money, time and social factors such as fear and safety) and external constraints (such as seasonality accessibility and influence by significant others) are also seen to influence the actual travel to a destination. This study will therefore attempt to find out the influence of both social-psychological set factors and destination characteristics in creating destination image and awareness among the youth in Kenya. Finally the study will explore the potential socio-economic constraints that influence actual travel. 1.9. Operational Definition of Terms Youth-In this study youth will refer to Kenyan citizens and foreign nationals who are aged between 15-30 years. Youth travel-refers to young Kenyan and foreign nationals aged 15-30 years who travel within Kenya for leisure, business and other purpose not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited. Niche market-defines the specific product features aimed at satisfying Kenyan youth travel markets needs as well as price range, production and quality. Destination-is any place in Kenya which attracts visitors, either as tourists who stay overnight or as same-day visitors. Domestic tourism-tourism involving Kenyan residents travelling within Kenya for the purpose of spending their leisure time. Backpackers-a form of tourism which appears to appeal mainly to a younger market, where tourist uses a rucksack, or a backpack rather than a suitcase to carry all they need. Tourism-refers to all activities of Kenyan visitors,(either as tourists (overnight visitors) and same day visitors) travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for leisure business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.
